How to make homemade cold brew: the complete guide

What is cold brew?

Cold brew is a method of extracting coffee without heat. The coffee is steeped in cold water for a long period, resulting in a smooth, low-acid, and naturally sweet beverage.

What you'll need
  • 60g coarsely ground coffee
  • 750ml filtered cold water
  • A glass jar or pitcher
  • A coffee filter or cheesecloth
Instructions
  1. Coarsely grind the coffee — A grind that is too fine will make filtering difficult and result in a bitter taste.
  2. Mix coffee and water — Combine the ground coffee and cold water in your jar. Stir gently to ensure the coffee is fully saturated.
  3. Steep in the refrigerator — Cover and steep for 12 to 24 hours in the refrigerator. The longer it steeps, the more intense the concentrate will be.
  4. Filter — Strain the mixture through a coffee filter or cheesecloth to remove the grounds.
  5. Serve — Dilute with water or milk to your taste, over ice.
Our tips

For an exceptional cold brew, choose a single-origin coffee with fruity or chocolate notes. Coffees from Ethiopia or Guatemala are particularly well-suited for this method. Cold brew can be stored for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
